Oldenburger country (Baptized on 2. July).
1662 Teaching as a carpenter with its father.
1666 Entrance into the organ workshop of his uncle Berendt Huss in Glückstadt
(Unterelbe) as an apprentice.
1671 Pupil in the workshop of Berendt Huss. The way of writing his name shows
in the early period a "k" and starting from 1695 "g".
1676 Death of Schnitgers teacher Berendt Huss
1677-1682 First independent activity from Stade. Schnitger completes the large
organ in the Wilhadikirche in Stade and 7 organs for which Huss was
contracted. The most important organs from this early workphase are in
Cappel and Lüdingworth.
1682 The workshop was moved to Hamburg, as consequence of the job for the
building of the organ in the Nicolai church, the largest new organ with 67
registers.
1684 Marriage with Gertrud Otte (1665 1707) out of Hamburg. From this
marriage 5 children survived:
Arp der Jüngere (1665-1712) died in Hamburg at the plague epidemic
disease.
Hans (1688-1708) died in Ochsenwerder when swimming in the Elbe.
Johann Jürgen (1690 -?) co-operated some years with its brother Franz
Caspar, before his tracks lose themselves.
Franz Caspar (1693-1729) worked as an organbuilder of high reputation
in the Netherlands and build the important organ in Zwolle, Alkmaar and
Groningen.
Catharina (1697-1736) died in Neuenfelde.
1693 Acquisition of the "organbuilderfarm" in Hamburg-Neuenfelde from the
possession of his father-in-law Hans Otte. In Neuenfelde a part of the
organ workshop was since 1705.
1707 Death of Schnitgers first wife Gertrud Otte.
1713 Marriage with Anna Elizabeth Koch, born Diekmann. She was the widow of
the organist in Abbehausen (in the country Oldenburg).
1719 Death and funeral on 29. July in the church to Neuenfelde, where today
still stands at the right of the altar his bank with his coat of arms.
